Want help planting an edible garden at home?
The Urban Farmers - Pilot in Lafayette: Many of us in Lafayette have yard space to
grow veggies, but not the time or expertise.  There is a new non-profit called
The Urban Farmers (www.theurbanfarmers.org) which aims to farm your backyard
for you.  You supply the land and water and they supply the labor and expertise.
All you need is 300+ square feet of growing space.  You receive all the food you
can eat and the excess is distributed to neighbors and charities.  They are hoping
to pilot their model in Lafayette and would like to hear from anyone that might be
interested.  Their service would be free.
Send an email to inquiries@theurbanfarmers.org or call (415) 806-7005.

Art
Taught by Karen Carbone and Deb Taylor
Acalanes High School offers a four year Art program to their students. The first year
fulfills the graduation and the U.C. Fine Art requirement.
Art 1 requires no previous Art experience. As a skills based course, students work on
projects that develop their artistic awareness and heighten their observation skills.
Through these experiences they learn how to see the world in a different way; to find
beauty in the ordinary. Students are taught the basics of art using a variety of media in
drawing and in painting. Art History is introduced and incorporated in these projects.
They learn problem solving and critical thinking which can be applied to many aspects of
their life. This will serve as a foundation for the other art courses.
The Intermediate Art and Advance Art courses explore new mediums and techniques.
Students experience a shift in their expression as they are encouraged to think in terms
of developing an awareness of storytelling through their art. Their work becomes more
personal, creative and expressive. The feeling of pride and accomplishment heightens
their self esteem giving them confidence in their high school years.
