PSAT
The PSAT will be given on October 17, 2009 at 8am at Acalanes High School.  Register online, beginning Sept. 21 through Oct. 11 on the AHS Web Store. The cost is $24.50. Student Study Guides are available in the Counseling Office.

The PSAT measures critical reading, math problem-solving (including Algebra and Geometry), and writing skills. It is a practice test for the SAT Reasoning test. Juniors planning to attend a four year college should take the PSAT.  Sophomores who have completed Geometry may consider taking the test.

Room assignments are posted on the Counseling Office window the Friday prior to the test.  Students taking the PSAT should plan to report to their assigned rooms at 8:00 the morning of the test with a photo ID, two sharpened #2 pencils, and a calculator.

Seniors
Counselors visited Government/Economics classes in September to discuss the importance of senior courses, graduation status, and the college application process.  During early October counselors will continue to meet individually with each senior.  These meetings will focus on graduation status, requirements, and post-graduate plans.

Transcripts
At the time of application, students do not send a transcript to UC or CSU campuses. Transcripts will be requested later.  Private schools and out-of-state public schools request a transcript be sent with the application materials.  The transcript fee is $3.00 per transcript.
Request a Transcript
1.  Request all transcripts through Naviance Family Connection
2.  Print out the Transcript Status page
3.  Bring the following to the Counseling Office:

Transcript Status page
$3.00 per transcript
Stamped, addressed envelopes for all schools NOT on the Common Application (transcripts for schools on the Common Application will be sent electronically) - do not fill in a return address
*  When you come to the Counseling Office you must know which schools are on the Common Application (find out at www.commonapp.org)

Letters of Recommendation
Most private colleges require letters of recommendation from one or two teachers and from a counselor (sometimes called a School Report).  Students should request letters from their teachers well in advance of their application deadlines.  Students requesting a letter from his/her counselor need to complete the Student Statement, Parent Statement, and Resume on Naviance Family Connection.  The deadline for the counselors is Oct. 1 for Early Action and Nov. 1 for Regular Decision.

PEER TUTORING

The Acalanes High School Peer Tutoring program is designed to help students in a safe, non-threatening, relaxed environment. The tutors are Juniors and Seniors who are chosen on the basis of teacher recommendation and personal interviews. They are excellent students who are also warm, caring kids who are interested in making Acalanes a place where everyone succeeds. Students may drop in and stay for any length of time and there is never any charge. We always have at least 5 tutors on duty and an appointment is never necessary. Our tutors can help with one problem or many, one sentence or a whole essay. We encourage kids to make Peer Tutoring a habit, but we welcome the one-time visitor also. The tutors are friendly and informal. Theyre students, too! Kids will discover how painless and pleasant it is to get help from peers. (We offer snacks, too). Parents, please encourage your students to take advantage of this unique program.

In the past, some teachers have offered extra credit to students for working with a tutor in Peer Tutoring and that has worked well. Parents shouldnt hesitate to speak personally with us about any issues concerning their students. We would be happy to tailor-make study sessions for students. Even though the directors are not at school all day they are always available by phone or e-mail.

Peer Tutoring is open.  Students can drop in for help during lunch, 7th period, or after school until 4pm.  Fran Taylor and Mary McCosker run the Peer Tutoring program which is located in the enclosed hallway next to the small theater.  The peer tutors are juniors and seniors who have been selected for their knowledge and ability to help others.  Contact Fran or Mary by e-mail if you have further questions.  ftaylor@acalanes.k12.ca.us or mmccosker@acalanes.k12.ca.us
